چکیده

We are developing a new type of photon detector in preparation of an experiment to search for muons decaying into positrons and gamma rays. In the experiment, the photon detector will utilize liquid xenon (Xe) as the scintillation material because of its fast response, large light yield, and high density. The scintillation light emitted in liquid Xe will be observed directly by positioning photomultipliers (PMTs) in the liquid without using a transmission window. In order to determine proper experimental procedures and to study the detector response to gamma rays, we constructed a prototype utilizing a 100 l volume of liquid Xe. The current status and future prospects of detector development are reported in this article. 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An 800 l liquid xenon scintillation γ ray detector is being developed for the MEG experiment which will search for μ → eγ decay at the Paul Scherrer Institut. Absorption of scintillation light of xenon by impurities might possibly limit the performance of such a detector. We used a 100 l prototype with an active volume of 372×372×496 mm to study the scintillation light absorption. We have devel...

Probing the Standard Model via rare pion and muon decays

The PIBETA collaboration has used a non-magnetic pure CsI calorimeter operating at the Paul Scherrer Institute to collect the world’s largest sample of rare pion and muon decays. We have extracted the absolute π → πeν decay branching ratio with the 0.55% total uncertainty. The π → eνγ data set was used to extract weak axial and vector form factors FA and FV , yielding a significant improvement ...

DARWIN: towards the ultimate dark matter detector

DARk matter WImp search with liquid xenoN (DARWIN) will be an experiment for the direct detection of dark matter using a multi-ton liquid xenon time projection chamber at its core. Its primary goal will be to explore the experimentally accessible parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) in a wide mass-range, until neutrino interactions with the target become an irreducib...

The 10bar hydrogen time projection chamber of the MuCap experiment

The experimental goal of the MuCap experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is a high-precision measurement of the singlet capture rate of the nuclear muon capture on the free proton in the reaction m þp-nþnm. The measuring principle is a lifetime measurement whereas the experimental approach is based on a specially developed Time Projection Chamber (TPC) operating with ultra-pure and de...

Apparatus for a Search for T-violating Muon Polarization in Stopped-Kaon Decays

The detector built at KEK to search for T-violating transverse muon polarization in K → πμνμ (Kμ3) decay of stopped kaons is described. Sensitivity to the transverse polarization component is obtained from reconstruction of the decay plane by tracking the μ through a toroidal spectrometer and detecting the π in a segmented CsI(Tl) photon calorimeter. The muon polarization was obtained from the ...
